POWERFUL Russian Aleksey Sokolov ran the race of his life yesterday to smash the course record on his way to winning the adidas Dublin City Marathon in style.

His wonderful time of two hours, nine minutes and seven seconds was not only a personal best but also two minutes and 32 seconds faster than the record he set when winning the event last year.

It was also the fastest marathon ever run on Irish soil, tiffanys surpassing the 2:11.30 which John Woods ran when winning the Irish title and Olympic trial in Wexford in 1988. And it was a fine double success for Russia as Alina Ivanova won the ladies race.

But it was Sokolov's win that delighted the race's organising committee.

Director Jim Aughney said: "We always felt there was the potential in Dublin for a world class time and this makes our efforts very worthwhile."

Admittedly conditions were good at the start and they got even better as the race progressed.

But it is an indication of how brilliant Sokolov was that his time was faster than any of the winners in Olympic history.

In fact the first three over the line broke the old record as Thomas Abyu - the Ethiopian-born British international star - took second place in 2:10.37 with Dejene Yirdawe of Ethiopia third.

Sokolov in all won EUR20,000, including the EUR5,000 bonus for the record. He had no sooner received his cheque at the finish than he was making plans to spend it.

He said: "I will put in the bank for a while and then use it as a deposit to buy an apartment," said Sokolov who turns 28 next week.

The race for the Irish title ended in a surprise winner in 34- year-old Galwayman Michael O'Connor who finished 14th overall in 2:25.48.

He got the better of the defending champion Cian McLoughlin with the previous champion, Gary Crossan from Letterkenny, taking the bronze in 2:26.58.

Meanwhile, Stainless Steel Bangle Ivanova also retained her women's title in a time of 2:29.20 - 29 seconds faster than her win the previous year.

"I was on my own for a long way and the wind was difficult at times but I'm very, very happy to come back here and win again," said the 38-year-old. "The people of Dublin gave me fantastic support last year and it was the same again this time."

Ivanova came home two minutes and 22 seconds ahead of another Russian, Larisa Zyusko, with Kenya's Nguriatukei Raelkiyara third in 2:33.27.

Interestingly, the winner is a former top-class walker who won the 10k event at the 1991 World Championships and then the 3,000m at the World Indoors the following year before switching to marathon running after being disqualified in the 1992 Olympics.

Pauline Curley from Tullamore was the first Irish woman over line, filling ninth place in 2:42.30 which was just outside her best.

"I felt very much in control and was thrilled at how strong I felt in the last few miles," said the 39-year-old mum who won the title she lost cheap abercrombie last year.

Lucy Brennan from Sligo with 2:50.03 took the silver medal while Ann Marie Smith grabbed the bronze.

Our relaxation suite was even more 007. Cathedral-like windows illuminated more sparkling granite, exotic fruit, up-market toiletries, scented candles as big as coffee tables and two ominous grey massage plinths. Massage was extra. Alcoa said its Reynobond aluminum composite material was selected for the facade of 100 Park Avenue, N.Y., the first retrofit building in New York City to receive LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver certification.

In a release, Alcoa said that 100 Park Avenue was one of the first steel and glass modern skyscrapers that transformed Park Avenue into a desirable business address. The SL Green Realty Corp. and Prudential Real Estate commissioned Moed de Armas & Shannon Architect of New York, to transform the classic address into a "New Modern Classic," a "state-of-the-art" corporate headquarters location constructed to sustainable design standards.

A GANG of Goths gather in the street on Friday night with bottles in their hands - but there's nothing menacing about these teenagers.

The bottles contain water because here there are no badges tiffany jewellery of honour for binge-boozing, drunken vandalism or beating up innocents.

I'm in Warrington's twin town Hilden 20 miles from Dusseldorf in Germany. Both towns have rich and poor suburbs, high-rise flats and the same Adidas-clad chavs, sports-mad teens and anti-establishment Goths.

But when it comes to the behaviour of teenagers, Hilden is in another world.

One of the Goths, Kevin Sadowski, 17, trots out the age-old moan that "there's nothing to do here" - but he still won't be going home with a criminal record.

He tells me: "I tried booze at about 12. But getting 'hammered' as you English say, and smashing windows or hurting someone is just pathetic. If we do drink we have one or two cans of beer because it tastes nice.

"But if you cannot have fun without booze, you must be a bit odd."

In the town's Area 51 youth centre - one of three in the 57,000-resident town which runs regular concerts, fitness classes, sports matches and cinema nights - 15-year-old Sadine Udder tells me: "I can't understand British teenagers.

"Why would I want to stand out in the watches-j street drinking then cause trouble and crime just for the sake of it?

"That's stupid. My parents would kill me. And I would be scared of the Polizei."

Sabine and her friends are not the Brady Bunch.

Jessica Baker, 14, says: "I once got so drunk on beer I passed out. Everyone laughed at me.

At the Polizei station, the duty cop claims it's been a busy night for youth crime. But while in UK towns that means fights and maybe a stabbing, in Hilden it means three boys arrested for kicking street lamps. Chief of Police Wolfgang Busch recoils when told about Garry Newlove's fate at the hands of drunk yobs.

A few years ago Hilden feared alcopops were becoming popular and set up a task-force between council, police and youth services.

It had two aims - to make sure there were enough youth facilities and to punish young LED light bulbs offenders within weeks of a crime so they learned their lesson quickly.

For nine months you will have to collect firewood to keep warm, dig your own toilet outside your hut and pump water from a well.

Herr Busch, who is to meet Warrington cops to discuss techniques, added: "The worst youth crime we had was a youth murdering another eight years ago.

"But they were both foreigners visiting here."

Ash - A-Z Vol 1 (Atomic Heart) "The album is dead," said Ash, "we will only release singles from now on." So here is the obvious compilation ALBUM of the first 13 in their 26-single A-Z campaign. They may have gone back on their word (and surely the knowledge that there will be a second collection will harm the next 13 singles' sales) but this is actually one of the strongest, most cohesive albums they've produced in years - from the electro pop throb of True Love 1980 to the Phil Spector meets Vibrators of Traces, they're all strong songs, and a reminder of what a fabulous little band they are.

We Have Band - WHB (Naive) Yes, I know you're bored with all these bands harking back to the '80s with their synths, vertical hair and lycra, but give this lot a chance. Like Chew Lips, there's something darker, more melancholic and, plainly, original about this trio. There was a lot of hoohah at the beginning of the year NHL_Fan_Shop about Delphic and their reimagining of dance music. Well, forget them and get with We Have Band and their mix of Blancmange, Fischerspooner (oh no, not the return of electroclash) and synth-period Wire.

Duke Special - The Stage, A Book & the Silver Screen (Pledge Music) Nothing if not ambitious, Ireland's criminally underrated songwriter releases three albums in one box, all funded by fans. It's the way to go, record industry. The Silent World of Hector Mann, based on a book by Paul Auster and recorded by Steve Albini, has the spirit of the 1920s stamped all over it while Huckleberry Finn is the first ever recording of an unfinished Kurt Weill musical and is, quite simply, impeccable. Throw in a new musical setting for Brecht's Mother Courage and you have something quietly subversive and wonderfully awry with the times. The spirit of Joplin, Nilsson and Wainwright hangs over these songs.

Darwin Deez - Darwin Deez (Lucky Number) He may look like Har Mar Superstar's little brother, but he sounds like The Strokes with a soupcon of the crazy new synth sounds of 1984, erm, sorry 2010. If the songs were better this would be a whole other story.

The state attorney was referring to the report published by State Comptroller Micha Lindenstrauss on Monday, summarizing his investigation of the failure of the police and the state prosecution to hand over to former justice minister Haim Ramon copies of wiretapped conversations related to the sexual misconduct charges against him during his trial. Ramon accused the police and the state prosecution of deliberately withholding the information as part of a conspiracy to make sure he was convicted and ousted from the Justice Ministry.

Lindenstrauss concluded that four senior police and prosecution officials had been guilty of "substantial negligence" in the affair and that the authorities should consider taking punitive measures against them. However, Lindenstrauss also found that no one had acted maliciously.

During a talk with legal reporters at the Justice Ministry, Lador strongly defended David and Segal-Antler.

"The Tel Aviv district attorney and the prosecutor in the case did not even violate a regulation," Lador told reporters. "After 30 years of work, David received a strident note that shattered her." David is due to retire shortly.

Lador added that nothing David or Segal-Antler had done justified any type of procedures against them, certainly not disciplinary ones.

"The mistake in this case was a routine one," he continued. "You will never see this kind of deed leading to disciplinary action."

However, Lador conceded that David had erred because she was not alert enough to question the policeman who told her that none of the wiretapped conversations were relevant to Ramon's case.

Lindenstrauss had accused David of filing the indictment against Ramon without having read all the investigative material - in this case, the wiretapped conversations - as she was supposed to. David maintained that she had asked the police whether the wiretapped conversations were relevant to the Ramon case and therefore constituted evidence and was told, orally and in writing, that they were not.

Nevertheless, said Lador, "a red light should have turned on in her head" because David knew the police had wiretapped the female soldier who had complained against Ramon and two others. "She should have thought that the policeman's answer was a bit odd," said Lador. "She should have been dubious.

"But to turn this omission into a conspiracy against Ramon, to shout, 'Oh my God, how horrible, you concealed evidence' is utterly baseless," he added.

Lador also argued that the state prosecution's written regulations did not require prosecutors to read all the case material themselves. That was the job of the police, he body jewelry wholesale said.

IN Bristol Times recently you made two references to roller skating at Bristol South Baths.

Three months after harshly criticizing soldiers who refuse orders, Pinchas Wallerstein, an icon of the settlement movement, has resigned as director-general of the Council of Jewish Communities of Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Strip.

The move comes amid a heated battle against the 10- month moratorium on new settlement construction that has deepened the rift in the settler community concerning whether IDF soldiers should obey orders to destroy Jewish homes in the West Bank.

Wallerstein became director-general in 2008, after heading the Binyamin Regional Council for 28 years. He was the first person to hold the Binyamin post, and under his leadership it became the largest regional council in the country.

He said he was convinced that the Council of Jewish Communities was the only body that could wage this struggle.

At the time, there were calls for his resignation, which were quelled when Wallerstein withdrew his condemnation.

Now, in his letter to the council, Wallerstein said, "Already during the discussion on whether to condemn the soldiers or not, I have not heard any member of the [council's] secretariat justifying the behavior of the soldiers. Some of us thought it was unworthy to respond, others thought the whole act was childish and stupid, and I thought under the circumstances that we should have responded, and firmly. I still think so today.

"It is our duty today to make sure the military isn't involved in the politics of evacuation and demolition, but we must not allow soldiers in uniform to take actions that may harm the sanctity of the IDF. Sophie, a tri-colored miniature Dachshund who loves toys that squeak, will greet you in January. Decked out in a snowflake sweater, Milo, a 2-year-old Maltese with a disdain for the doorbell, wraps things up in December.

In between, 13 other local cats and dogs make the months of 2010 special.

"A Celebration of Pets," a 12-month calendar for a good cause, will be on sale the first week of November.

Pat's Studio of Fine Art Photography in Deep Creek took all the photos again for the second year. All profits from calendar sales go to the Chesapeake Humane Society. Calendars are $12.95.

Pat Meinen said photographing pets can actually be easier than children.

"Two-year-olds can get upset and their faces turn red and you have to wait for that to clear up," he said. "A dog can get upset and a minute later be fine."

Particularly challenging in the 2010 calendar was the use of cats, a first.

"Cats are more skittish," Meinen said. "They can run into another room and hide."

That was the case with May cover girl, Kelli, photographed in her own home. Kelli rebounded to show off her green eyes and colorful ears. A second cat, Marco, shares November with Abbey Gail, the dog.

Not all the pets are small and cute. February belongs to Guinness, a striking black Great Dane. A Weimaraner named Cody kicks off July.

Last year's calendar raised $600 for the Humane Society. Already, $300 has been raised this fall. Owners paid $25 to enter their pets online to determine which animals would be photographed.

Yul Lim has owned retail stores for 30 years, and for the first time , his sales in the normally slow month of February this year topped those in December during the busy holiday season.

That anomaly told Lim, who owns Lim's and Basix men's clothing stores at The Gallery at Military Circle, that nothing - not even Christmas - can persuade people to spend if their budgets won't allow it. So the state's sales tax holiday, beginning Friday, might provide a small boost in sales but cannot overcome a lost job or other financial difficulties facing some consumers, Lim said.

"We all like to buy our kids more stuff, but this year more than ever, I think you'll recycle what you have," Lim said. "I expect business to pick up a little but not like before" the recession.

Virginia's annual back-to-school tax holiday allows consumers to save the state's 5 percent sales tax on school supplies costing $20 or less and clothing and footwear priced $100 or less. The event runs from Friday to Sunday.

Even with the tax break in its fifth year, some consumers don't realize they can save the money or don't think about it when they shop.

"I've never really taken advantage of it ," said Tessa Barthelmy , 35, who needs clothes and supplies for her 16-year-old son and daughters, ages 3 and 2, who attend preschool. "It all depends on how I shop, and mostly I shop in the offseason."

Recent surveys for the back-to-school shopping season show that consumers continue to exercise caution with their spending, despite declarations and signs that economic recovery has begun. Among the shoppers surveyed for the National Retail Federation, almost 43 percent said they plan to spend less this year, and nearly 30 percent said they would make do with last year's school items.

What might drive cash-constricted consumers more than the tax savings this weekend are the discounts many stores are offering - most steeper than 5 percent . No stores had banners Wednesday indicating the upcoming sales tax holiday.

A few of the mall's retailers had tables out in front of their stores Wednesday afternoon, but Glenn said he has heard merchants say they are more inclined to participate in the sidewalk sale this year because it incorporates the tax holiday.

Alexander Lau, owner of My Hot Spot, a sportswear and footwear shop , said his sidewalk-sale tables of discounted sneakers and sandals have helped drive traffic. He expected the sales tax holiday to do the same.

"For this kind of economy, when you make $100 in purchases, a $5 savings you can use for something else," he said.

Lau knows customers who are out of work. Some of his employees have asked him to hire their friends or family members.

"I don't see a big difference, compared to last year" with the economy, Lau said. "The number of people still looking for a job is the same."

When Luke, 7, came to St. Charles Children's Home in Rochester two years ago, he struggled to climb stairs. Last week, he ran a 15- minute mile - and the nuns who raise him are still quietly celebrating.

Such athletic feats are common at the home, where the sisters don sneakers with their blue-and-white habits and jog daily with the two dozen children in their care. Running is never punishment, but rather therapy for kids who are often angry, scared and lonely, recovering from whatever family troubles brought them to St. Charles.

"We can't talk about what we're feeling until we let off some steam," said Sister Maximilian, one of four members of the Daughters of Mary, Mother of Healing Love, who staff the home. "That's what running does: It lets off steam."

"He's one of our heroes," Sister Maximilian said.

St. Charles's running program started a decade ago, after the sisters helped a young girl work through her anger by walking and, later, jogging each day. Since then, it's eased many of the burdens the children carry: neglect, abuse, learning disabilities and rage. Kids with low self-esteem get better at sports and have an easier time making friends. A couple of children have overcome weight problems, and most seem better able to focus on school.

"It's not the answer to everything," Sister Maximilian said. "But it's a very powerful tool."

Traveling to road races gives the nuns a chance to teach social skills and proper behavior. Before leaving the home, they remind the children how to act in public and reinforce the rules throughout the day. And then one day I got older. That's when the stopwatch starting going backwards -- and not in a good way. That's when I got slower.

How slow did I get? I was so slow that even if the Slowskis were the only people (or turtles) running in my division, I didn't win. I was so slow that even if I was the only person running in my division, I didn't win, either.

So. Here I am now -- being beaten by imaginary turtles from TV commercials. How then to motivate myself to keep moving? WHAT A FEELING: comprehensive victory HUDDERSFIELD Giants took another huge step towards the Super League play-offs with a dominant destruction of the out-classed and out-muscled Harlequins.

This was far from the Giants at their best, but even without half-a-dozen senior players, they were still head and shoulders above the Londoners.

The Giants' first-half performance, in particular, was far from impressive as they held an unconvincing 8-4 advantage.

But in the second half it was a totally different story as they crossed for six well-taken tries without a solitary Quins' reply.

It was clear the visitors' opening efforts to keep the Giants at bay had taken their toll, paving theway for coach Nathan Brown's men to cruise victory.

And they wasted little time showing they'd got over the disappointment of the last-gasp defeat at Leeds Rhinos with a positive start to the contest.

Former Palm Beach County Commissioner Tony Masilotti can't use a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision to reverse his conviction on corruption charges, an appeals court strongly indicated this week.

And though the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals wasn't dealing with the convictions of former Commissioners Mary McCarty or Warren Newell, the decision also casts a cloud over their ability to win relief.

The Atlanta-based court said that while the Supreme Court in June threw out parts of the honest services fraud statute as unconstitutionally vague, the high court ruled that it still could be used against officials who accept bribes or kickbacks.

Indicating that Masilotti's crimes fell into that category, U.S. Circuit Judge Frank Hull then quoted from the charges that sent the former Royal Palm Beach mayor to prison for five years.

Hull noted that Masilotti pleaded guilty to "using his elected position to advance his undisclosed financial interest in three separate real estate transactions." The ex-commissioner also admitted to receiving "significant gratuities from a commercial developer who did business with (the county), including thousands of dollars worth of airfare and other gifts."

Prosecutors said Masilotti and his family made millions from the secret land deals.

Attorney Barry Witlin, who represents Masilotti, said he's not willing to give up the fight.

The court "misstates the facts about what he pled to and whether it was a bribe or a kickback," he said. "A bribe or a kickback requires a quid pro quo. Just receiving money, unreported income, doesn't mean it's a bribe or a kickback."

Witlin said he likely will ask the full court to hear Masilotti's appeal. Failing there, he said he would probably take it to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Although the high court just ruled on the honest services fraud statute, Witlin said it's not unusual for justices to address the same subject in short order.

"Once they've made a ruling and have a chance to see the reaction to it within the legal community, they can determine if they want to revisit the issue and tweak it," he said.

Masilotti began his appeal before the high court's ruling. He asked that his conviction be thrown out after U.S. District Judge Kenneth Ryskamp said last year that he believed the law was unconstitutional.

Both Ryskamp and Hull rejected the argument. Besides, both said, Masilotti raised the issue too late. He had a year to appeal his conviction. The time ran out in July 2008 -- 14 months before he filed his appeal.

After the Supreme Court ruling in June, attorneys representing McCarty and Newell joined Witlin in expressing cautious optimism that they might be able to use it to overturn the convictions. Neither could be reached for comment Wednesday.

Like Masilotti, the two pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit honest services fraud. Like Masilotti, both admitted that they had used their offices for personal gain.

Most of my shoots are on-location events like concerts, ballets, and weddings, where I use on-scene lighting or, at most, an on-camera light. When I've done training videos and other similar shoots where I had more control, I've used "ad hoc lighting," which is how I refer to the collection of tungsten shop lights and incandescent clamp lights I've accumulated through the years. These work OK, but aren't really portable, don't provide precise controls over lighting placement or intensity, and certainly don't impress the client.

I recently had the opportunity to work with the Lowel DV Creator 44 Kit ($1,695 retail) for some interviews I was shooting for both DV and DVD distribution. It was a fun and interesting experience that I thought I would share.

Some introductory thoughts. First, I'm a soft-light fanatic because I don't like the detail, edges, and shadows that hard lights deliver. Second, I tend to use flat lighting more than the shadowed look created by traditional three-point lighting technique. This matches the mood of my non-event shoots, which are generally businesslike, rather than artsy film noir, and it certainly compresses better when shooting for streaming.

By its specs, the DV Creator 44 seemed to pose a couple of problems. First, all the kits are tungsten-powered, and tungsten is a hard light source. Second, the two main lights have different bulb strengths, one at 300 W, the other 750 W. I wondered going in how I was going to combine those lights up to produce flat, even lighting.

I had two projects to light. One was a shoot with a local physician who wanted to post pre-operative instructions online. Since this was business-oriented and internet-bound, I planned to create soft, flat lighting.

The other project consisted of interviews with local bluegrass band No Speed Limit, shot while rehearsing for a New Year's Eve performance at the fabulous Rex Theater here in Galax. The band's goal was to produce a DVD to send to concert and festival promoters, and they wanted the interviews to supplement the concert footage of actual songs. With lighting I was going for a slightly edgier look, with shadows modeling the band members faces to provide a little drama.

Lowel shipped the DV Creator kit in a single hard-shell case that weighed about 35 lbs. Having all lights, stands, and cords in one portable container saved a couple of trips back to the car and would be essential if you're traveling by plane.

Opening the case revealed the four lights in the kit. As I mentioned, all were tungsten-powered, so the lights themselves were very small and didn't weigh much, but produced hard lighting. Fortunately, the kit provided multiple methods for converting all lights to soft lights, either with an umbrella, gels, diffusion filters, or a softbox.

For example, in the physician's office, I used the Rifa-44 softbox as one of the two main lights designed to create the flat, even lighting. The softbox itself is a large canvas shell formed by a collapsable wire harness with an opaque screen that softens the light. The bulb included in the kit was 300 W, though it seemed much stronger.

For the other light, I used the 750 W Tota-light, fastening the included Tota-brella into a slot in the light. I pointed the light away from the physician and bounced the light off the umbrella, creating soft, even lighting. The kit doesn't include any dimmer controls, so I moved the Tota-light away from the physician until its power matched that of the 300 W softbox, which produced the desired flat, even lighting.

Britain's biggest listed property developer is expected to announce in a trading update on Wednesday that it has secured enough pre-lettings with retailers to begin construction of Trinity Leeds, a 1m sq ft development in Leeds city centre creating more than 120 new outlets.

The announcement will be a vote of confidence in the UK economy, creating hundreds of new jobs.

Shopping centre projects across the country, including Trinity, were mothballed as the financial crisis struck, dragging the pipeline of retail developments to record lows.

However, Land Securities, financially bolstered after a rights issue and asset sales last year, is keen to restart the Trinity project because it believes an increasing amount of retail sales will focus on the large regional centres, such as Leeds, which is considered to be underserved.

MORE PIECES of the Frederic Alonzo Carrington puzzle have been put into place at Puke Ariki.

A direct descendant of the settler surveyor, who arrived in New Zealand in 1841, has gifted a hand-drawn map, diary, spy-glass and atlas to the combined library and museum.

Archives curator Diana Gibbons said two Maori adzes, three bone pendants and a plaited flax rope, called a pikau, were also among the donation from Kevin Deacon, of Hastings. The artefacts had once belonged to Carrington.

Mrs Gibbons said the intricate pen, ink and water-colour manuscript map appeared to have been drawn about 1841 -- before Carrington's famous map published about 1842 or 1843.

"It's got quite a lot of damage along the fold lines," she said of the latest treasure. "To have it stored in controlled conditions in an institution . . . I think Frederic himself would he happy to have it here."

The map would be available for people to view on request.

"These objects that go with it are just tremendous, especially the spy-glass. He would have used this to view the land as he did his measurements and documented it all."

The London Atlas by John Arrowsmith also mapped the past -- especially for those keen on Trivial Pursuits.

The large book, given to Carrington in 1856 by an unknown person, features a New Zealand map, dated 1853. At this time, the North Island was known as New Ulster, the South Island as New Munster and Stewart Island as New Leinster.

The diary, which covered the period 1872-74, was written when Carrington was the Member of the House of Representatives for Omata.

"It's very much his daily diary of who he called on and the kind of legislation he was pursuing in Parliament," Mrs Gibbons said.

"He certainly had his constituents at heart."

Mrs Gibbons said the diary would be considered as original Replica Roger Dubuis Watches information, or a primary source for researchers. While Government records were on hand, a diary like Carrington's offered a personal perspective on the past.

"There's all sorts of interesting little snippets that for some people may be a significant part of a jigsaw or puzzle."

Among the Carrington collection already held in Puke Ariki is a journal that has held secrets for the past 160 years.

The main part of the journal contains open letters written by Carrington when he was chief surveyor of the Plymouth Company. But at the back is a sealed section that contains "private correspondence only".

It has never been opened.

"Kevin (Deacon) wears on his hand a sealing ring that belonged to Fred Carrington and it was the one used to seal the letter book we have here," Mrs Gibbons said.

The debate about whether or not to open the secret letters first arose in 1966 when former Mayor E.O. Hill called for the sealed section to be made public. "Once the linen tape has been cut and the pages opened, it can never be returned to its original state. It's like an archaeological dig; once it's done its gone forever. All we have left is the information in it."
