NO ONE ever called in sick over a blister, we're told (Mail). Well, I nearly ended up without a degree because of killer heels.

Three years of hard work could have Richard Mille Watch been wasted when I fell and fractured my leg in those shoes, ten days before my Finals. I revised for and took those exams in terrible pain.

When Brooke Dobni, a long-time member of the faculty of the U of S business school, accepted the offer to complete the term of out-going dean Grant Isaac, he knew he was stepping into some big shoes.

As one of three associate deans of the Edwards School of Business, he had a ring side seat for the Isaac term but, when the departing dean nodded in his direction as a potential replacement, he thought he'd better give it some consideration. And, when the campus administration suggested they were looking for someone who would not only be interested in completing Isaac's term but would be game to pursue the post for the longer-term--basically that they wanted more than just a warm body in the meantime--he was all over it.

"They said they wanted business as usual, not a caretaker," Dobni says of his new role. As associate dean he was familiar with the plan already in place and, in his words, "we haven't skipped a beat."

The plan he refers to has dramatically elevated the school's profile in both the business and academic communities. Fundraising has never been better, opening the door for expansion of programming and the school's footprint.

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

Dobni brings both the academic and the practical to his new role. He was a consultant in the private sector before heading into the academic arena two decades ago. With a background in corporate strategy, specifically marketing of major U.S. telecoms, he brings a broader business background to the table than most in these roles, individuals who often are drawn from the economics or human resources streams.

"I always prided myself on Thomas Wylde Fake Handbags my consulting background, my connections with the downtown business community," Dobni offers in describing his road to the dean's office, albeit in an acting role for now. Besides the business experience, he also has a business PhD, something Isaac, at the time of his departure, suggested meant the school was actually in better hands now.

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

While the dean's position technically won't be filled until next July, following a national and international search, Dobni isn't waiting for a formal anointing next year. He's got things to get done right now.

The easiest way to describe his mission is: a clear alignment with the business world.

"We see business as a priority," he offers, noting that different individuals have delivered unique results while in the school's top post. One forerunner was focused internally. Isaac, by contrast, devoted considerable attention to the external community. Dobni leans more towards the latter but has some strong views on positioning the school in the increasingly competitive world of business colleges.

NEW LANDSCAPE

Business schools around the world have emerged from the sleepy world of the tweed jackets and pensive pipe smokers, adopting many of the competitive practices employed by the businesses which hire their graduates. Armed with huge contributions from successful business-people they are reaching out to prospective students around the globe. The offerings for students have never been more diverse. MBAs online are now commonplace and many schools are now taking their shows on the road, offering executive MBAs in communities across the country.

The next phase of the Edwards School's strategic plan, says Dobni, is determining "what we want to be."

"It is ve

THE story about the lady getting stuck on the fence (Peterborough) brought back a particular memory from when I worked in a shoe shop in Ruislip, Middlesex. It was in 1952 when I was 15. One day, all the staff were at dinner, except me and the manager - a Mr Blackmore. I was up a tall stepladder putting shoeboxes away when I slipped and my clothes got caught at the top of the steps. Boxes came down with a clatter.

The manager was on the phone at the time. 'It's all right,' he said to whoever was on the line. 'It's only Miss Clark showing me all her underwear.' I had forgotten about the mirrors - and was my face red!
