Work Title: My Diva: 65 Gay Men on the Women Who Inspire Them Work Author(s): Michael Montlack, editor University of Wisconsin Hardcover $24.95 (322pp) Social Sciences ISBN: 9780299231200 Reviewer: Elizabeth Millard cheap coach purses Some of the credit for Michael Montlacks lively, engaging collection has to go to Stevie Nicks-even though she and the editor havent met, and its possible that shell never read his ode to her power.Thats beside the point, however. For nearly all of the essayists in My Diva-the ruminations on the charms, confidence, and beauty of the women who influenced them-arent for the women themselves. Rather, theyre a bright glimpse into the nature of diva-worship and how such ideals can shape lives. Some even choose fictional divas-Princess Leia, Wonder Woman, Endora from Bewitched-further displaying how sometimes just the portrayal of glamour and strength can replica tag heuer watches be transformative. The book project was kicked off when Montlack, a poet and English professor at Berkeley College, decided to write an essay on Stevie Nicks, his teenage-era heroine. While pondering the connections between gay men and their divas, he solicited submissions, and encountered a landslide of enthusiasm. His only rules: one diva per writer, and no repetition, to prevent multiple essays on Cher, for example. The result is a wide-ranging, intelligent romp through history, arranged according to diva birth date. The journey begins with Sappho, and covers mainly musicians, writers, and actresses. The perhaps predictable choices of Judy Garland, Barbra Streisand, and Madonna dont even appear, much to Montlacks admitted surprise. Their omission makes way instead for women like Lucille Ball, Julia Child, Nina Simone, and Margaret Cho.The essayists, too, encompass a wide swath of experience, from poets and professors to novelists and activists. Although their essays each have a distinctive voice, they share a common tone of awe toward the women they honor. The writers often marvel at the nuanced empowerment they felt simply by watching a divas movies, or listening to her songs, sensing qualities that they could fold into their own lives. In writing about Gloria Swanson, for example, novelist and poet Edward Field notes: Thomas sabo charms "There is something about these larger-than-life movie stars that represents our yearnings for vindication, in which we see ourselves transcending the difficulties a gay man faces in this world." Even though Swanson spirals into delusion in Sunset Boulevard, she goes down in glory, acting out the struggles and ambition mirrored in the life of a gay man, Field believes. The essays in this collection are brief but luminous, and relevant to all of us. They show the brighter side of a celebrity culture-one in which icons arent tabloid fodder, but instead, act as forces of change and personal power for those who love them from afar. Byline: BETH HALE;SINEAD MCINTYRE A WOMAN who says she had a fling with Michael Portillo broke her silence about their relationship yesterday. Ex-lingerie model Rachel Johnston, 31, said she got to know the married former Conservative highflier after writing to him nine years ago when she was a student - asking him for a photograph. She admitted that she 'fancied' the then Defence Secretary. Then last week, Miss Johnston and Mr Portillo were spotted coming out of each other's rooms at a Belfast hotel where the 52-year-old ex-MP was at a business conference. At one point, Miss Johnston was seen exiting his room after two hours locked away together. She later claimed a sexual relationship with Mr Portillo, but insisted the hotel encounter was the first and only time they had made love. cheap coach purses Yesterday, recalling how she first got to know him, she said she was in her early 20s and a virtual recluse who refused to step outside her parents' home in Belfast because of her debilitating agoraphobia. 'It's true that in the early 1990s I did have a correspondence with Michael,' she told the Belfast Telegraph. 'I was cooped up indoors, unable to go outside, and I'd started to do an A-level in English literature to pass the time. 'Being honest about it, I fancied Michael and I wrote to him saying that as part of my studies I had to do a profile of a public figure. 'I asked him whether he would send me some photos of himself and also give me some information about a political career. I got a very formal letter back from him, but then we started to correspond on a more regular basis. 'Before I knew it, he was starting to call me up and we began to really get to know each other very well. But it wasn't a sexual relationship. 'He did come to Belfast during that time, but he was Defence Secretary and had a lot of security around him, so we never actually met up. It was just a very supportive friendship.' She had told him she suffered from agoraphobia - fear of open spaces. 'While most people don't really understand what that means, he took some time to find out. I'd also sent him some photos of myself.' They lost contact after she began seeing Sammuel Gibbs - father to her two children. But last December, Mr Gibbs committed suicide after Miss Johnston walked out on him. replica hublot watches She claimed she left over his infidelity. 'I know that he cheated on me on various occasions during our relationship. He would have gone out to play golf and then stayed out all night. I also saw sexual text messages and emails that he received.' Mr Gibbs appeared to have a predisposition to suicide, she claimed. ' Sammuel was always telling everyone that he was going to kill himself. The first time I left him, he took an overdose and had to have his stomach pumped. 'Right from the beginning of our relationship, he was always threatening to kill himself. He always kept a rope in the car boot for that purpose. Other times he'd storm out of the house and say he was away to the garage to kill himself and I'd sit there shaking, not knowing whether I should ring the police or if it was just another example of him crying wolf.' After the suicide, she logged on to Mr Portillo's website and decided to send him an email. 'He replied quickly, saying, "Rachel, this is horrendous, I'm so sorry..." Byline: Richard Kay THEIR meeting in America was cordial, almost to the point of being perfunctory. But as Barack Obama prepares for his first visit to Britain as U.S. President for the G20 summit, I can reveal Gordon Brown has been planning a secret charm offensive to woo him -- via his taste-buds. He wants to take Obama and his wife Michelle to sample the delights on offer at Jamie Oliver's flagship charitable restaurant in East London, Fifteen. Not only does the Prime Minister want to impress Obama with the exquisite food at the famously unstuffy not-for-profit establishment, but it will also be an opportunity for Brown to showcase Oliver's much-lauded scheme to take disadvantaged teenagers -- some of whom have been to jail -- and turn them into top chefs. cheap coach purses Staff at the restaurant in Old Street, close to Moorfields Eye Hospital, have been sworn to secrecy, but I understand the building has been visited by security teams this week ahead of the planned lunch. Brown's decision to take Obama to Fifteen mirrors Tony Blair's invitation to President Clinton to dine at the then trendy chrome-and-glass Pont de la Tour near Tower Bridge soon after his election 1997. Oliver, who is one of the most recognisable chefs in the country, has turned the art-deco former sheet metal factory into a replica breitling watches high quality Italian restaurant. These days, Jamie himself has little to do with the day-to-day running of the eatery, which he founded in 2002 in a bid to start apprenticeships for the homeless, the unemployed and others of life's strugglers. It featured in the Channel 4 series Jamie's Kitchen. The leaking of the plans may, of course, lead to a change. Downing Street officials said it was not aware of the visit, but insiders at Fifteen have told me they have been put on standby to cook for President Obama and the First Lady. It is understood a menu has yet to be drawn up, but one figure Thomas sabo charms who will not be at the restaurant is Oliver's wife, Jools, who is expecting their third baby on the day of the planned presidential visit. 'It's all top secret, but staff are very excited,' I am told. 'The place has been swept by security teams. The only dampener is that Jools can't be there -- Jamie would love that.' Holy Land USA, a Bedford County theme park that offers tours of replicated biblical sites to tell the story of Jesus, is up for auction -- the victim of high upkeep costs and low attendance. The park closed earlier this month, possibly forever. Holy Land USA Inc., the nonprofit that runs the park -- which features replicas of Jesus' tomb and the Upper Room where he supped with his disciples -- plans to sell the site of nearly 200 acres to the highest bidder on Dec. 16, less than two years after buying it and reopening it. The park, which first opened in 1972, had been closed from 2005 to March 2008. Replica watches "We have given it our best," said Mike Dodson, head of the group that bought the 37-year-old park last year. "We spent a lot of money to get it open, but it's going to take a lot to keep it open." Dodson said the park, located south of Bedford, costs up to $14,500 a month to run. During the busiest part of its season it averages about 300 visitors a week, netting the park a maximum of $3,000 weekly. Adults pay $10 to take the three-mile walking or motorized tour of the park and its 20 biblical sites. Holy Land was founded by Robert Johnson on an old farm, and in its first three decades it drew an estimated 500,000 visitors and took in about $5 million in donations, according to former general manager Richard Dooley. The park operated continuously until 2005, when Dooley closed it (Johnson died in 1999) to look for a buyer. Dodson, head of Tree of Life Ministries in Lynchburg, and a group of trustees bought the property in February 2008 for $750,000, reopening it the following month. Dodson said the nonprofit organization upgraded the Embroidered Patches park, invested heavily in advertising and started renting out Noah's Ark, a two-story house with a boat-shaped deck, as a retreat center. Still, the nonprofit was not able to make enough money to pay the high maintenance costs, even though the park is staffed by volunteers, not paid employees. According to TRF Auctions of Lynchburg, the property will be auctioned as five separate tracts, though bidders will have the opportunity to bid on the property as a whole. The company's Web site touts the property as ideal for use as a camp, church facility, corporate retreat, recreational land or timber investment. Omega Watch Replica Dodson said Holy Land USA Inc. can refuse to sell the park if the winning bid is deemed too low. If that's the case, the organization will try to reopen next year, he said. He added that he hopes the next owner continues to operate the park, but "if they can't, they can do what they want to with it." A stone slab that helped medieval Mendip traders beat the cheap coach purses Black Death has been recreated and will be unveiled next week by veteran broadcaster Sir David Frost. The slab is an exact replica of the original that occupied the site of The Slab House Inn, near Wells, during the time of the Black Death between 1348 and1350. When a three-mile quarantine limit was imposed around Wells, cautious farmers replica hublot watches and traders would leave food, drink and other produce on the slab for locals to come and collect. While watching "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past," I kept trying to put a finger on just what it was about Matthew McConaughey that wasn't sitting well with me. I admit, I love Matthew in almost every movie he's cast, even the bad ones. Then Jennifer Garner's character, Jenny Perotti, finally nailed it for me when she said: "I didn't see your handsome, awful self. Today, you're the guy I used to know." In "Ghosts," all the standard McConaughey elements are there -- confidence (now referred to as swagger), charm, good looks, nice physique, Replica watches dripping accent -- and in most of his rom-com roles, you forgive him long before the predictable OK-so-I-realize-I-do-love- you ending. But, Connor Mead (McConaughey's character) was way more of an egotistical jerk than usual, and McConaughey played it all too well. I almost feel like this is who he might be in real life - - the noncommittal charmer who laughs at love. "Ghosts" is a story about this hot, self-absorbed women's lingerie photographer who gets play at every turn. Men think he's a god. Women throw themselves at him. But it's the classic story: love 'em, leave 'em, don't give 'em a second thought. Connor is so wrapped up in himself, not to mention the legs of a woman, that he almost forgets his brother Paul's (Breckin Meyer) wedding. It's not until he arrives at the house of his late Uncle Wayne's (played spot-on by Michael Douglas), where the wedding is held, that we start to see another dimension to his character. We learn why he is the way he is. It takes Jenny (Garner) to get us there. Garner is the real talent in this movie, even though she is constantly overshadowed by McConaughey's role. She's his childhood sweetheart, the girl he should've kissed first, the one he should've dated and married, the yin to his yang. Instead, he went a different route. And she stood by -- definitely not something her "Alias" character would've done. Embroidered Patches As the movie plays out, it's all about Connor. He does his best to sabotage the wedding and is visited by three ghosts (like Scrooge from "A Christmas Carol") who show him the error of his womanizing ways. It is during these visits where we are finally offered a real glimpse of his decades-long on/off relationship with Jenny. It's not until the "Time After Time" montage, however, seemingly thrown in by director Mark Waters ("Mean Girls"), that we finally sense Louis Vuitton Replica Handbags the chemistry between the two. It's thanks to Cyndi Lauper that I finally teared up and felt a connection. (Is the montage what we need to spark a flame these days?) Connor -- and McConaughey -- reach redemption in the end. Finally, "the guy I used to know" shows up, although it takes much longer than usual. I was pretty over him at that point, honestly. I think Garner might agree. I felt even she was rolling her eyes. "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past" ** 1/2 At Carmike 10 at Tanglewood Mall, Grandin Theatre, Valley View Grande 16 and Westlake Cinema. Rated PG-13 for sexual content, some language and a drug reference. Byline: David Matthews We are inside a concrete mausoleum in Hodgenville, Kentucky, when the reality of modern America starts to take hold. 'It's a bit tacky, isn't it?' says Suzanne. I nod. Can they really use a replica wooden shack as a shrine to the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln? 'We are due a good President,' says cheap coach purses the shrine's attendant, Stephen Brown. He is among the white Americans backing Obama. 'The problem is people around here go to church every Sunday,' Stephen whispers. 'When their preacher says Obama supports gay rights or abortion, and that's sinful, they believe it. These are good people but they listen to what these preachers say.' If the polls are right, Kentucky is solid McCain territory. But on the ground, things seem less clear. Over breakfast at the Springs Inn in Lexington, I meet Phil. 'I'm a redneck from Georgia,' says Phil, 'but I don't like McCain. Just because he's a Republican doesn't mean I'm gonna automatically vote for him.' Phil, a fiftysomething pipe organ maker enraged by the economic meltdown, reveals his admiration for Sarah Palin - 'She's something else' - and says he would have voted for Colin Powell had he been the Republican candidate. 'He's a war hero, an experienced politician and he has respect at home and abroad. But he don't want the aggravation. Besides, most black people think he's an Uncle Tom, so he wouldn't get their vote.' Phil is one of the few white Americans prepared to talk to us about race-politics, though, like many others, he claims 'race has nothing to do with it'. Obama, meanwhile, still provokes fear and distrust. 'We don't know who he is or where he's come from,' claims Mary, a portly, middle-aged IT consultant, at a Lexington bar. 'He hasn't got the experience.' While it's true that Obama is no political heavyweight, what experience did George W. Bush have, other than being the son of a former President? And what about Palin? 'She's a mother of five children,' says Mary, 'and that takes some doing.' The issues of 'trust' and 'inexperience' come up repeatedly as reasons to be fearful of Obama. Aside from their literal meaning, these words also strike me as extended code for 'black', tapping into a latent fear of 'the other'. Americans live in constant fear, whether of ethnic differences, foreign attack, illness or financial ruin. No wonder US politics is fuelled by conspiracy theories. 'Obama's definitely gonna win but they'll try to take him out,' predicts George, a black security guard at the Keeneland race track, outside Lexington. 'But Obama's got more security than any candidate in history, so he'll be OK.' Watching racegoers sip mint juleps, the demarcation lines between blacks, whites and Hispanics is clear. I notice only one other mixed-race 'couple'. In fact, during the entire week with Suzanne, I see just two obvious blackwhite relationships. At first, many Americans assume Suzanne and I are an 'item'. We receive the odd stare, though it feels like the result of genuine smalltown curiosity than anything more sinister. On the face of it, America seems to have moved on from Jim Crow. Far more crude, though, is the gratuitous attention Suzanne garners from men, simply for being female. During the Democratic nomination race, I had argued with many female friends that America was more ready for a white female President than a black male one. Judging by Hillary Clinton's doomed campaign and the salacious looks Suzanne http://watches2010.ko-co.jp/e78753.htmlhttp://www.mingdaocn.com/Two-escape-after-a-fall-in-icy.html

THEATRE AS YOU LIKE IT Globe, SE1 THERE'S always lots going on in the Forest of Arden but if any outing for these delightful sylvan shenanigans is not underpinned by a solid base layer of charm, it's done for. The RSC's current gloomy Stratford production, which is big on rural hardship and short on anything resembling appeal, is a case in point. It's good to see that director Thea Sharrock doesn't make this fundamental mistake in a fluid, confident Shakespearean debut. For my money, two key relationships provide the tent poles of this comedy. Firstly, we have devoted cousins Rosalind (Naomi Frederick) and Celia (Laura Rogers), who cannot bear to be separated when the former is banished from the court of vituperative Duke Frederick. cheap coach purses replica breitling watches For us to believe in the girls' solidarity and their passionately assumed personae of Ganymede and Aliena, the pair must sparkle equally, even if Celia gets desperately short shrift in the romance stakes. Frederick is a triumph, donning dashing leather britches and blending confidence and vulnerability in exactly the right quantities, yet Rogers is more than her equal, stamping some much- needed character onto this too often washed-out role. For once, we can believe that evil baddie turned redeemed lover Oliver ( Jamie Parker, assured) falls for her on the spot. Unfortunately, the soggy end of the tent, in this typically liberating and expiatory Shakespearean forest, is due to Rosalind's romance. Jack Laskey's Orlando starts out promisingly as an ardent if callow youth but doesn't proceed to suggest anything near the emotional depth of Frederick. There's little spark between the pair either; Sharrock should have worked for greater coherence here. Still, there's much to enjoy in the rest of the strongly realised roles from this far better than average Globe cast. Those two old bores, Touchstone and Jaques, are made fresh and appealing by Dominic Rowan, who has a fine time grandstanding to the groundlings with his nimble wit, and Tim McMullan. Not only does McMullan's rich-voiced Jaques luxuriate in his melancholy, he's so studiedly lugubrious that he can barely make it to the end of a sentence. All's well in this new Arden-Eden in the end, of course, and we like the journey to the joyous resolution well enough. links of london charms In rep until 10 October. Information: 020 7401 9919, . A friend and army colleague of the last surviving officer from the famous Pegasus Bridge assault during D-Day says his death has "left a hole that will never be filled." Colonel Michael Woodcock had known Col David Wood, who died earlier this month, for 40 years and described his friend as a "charming, generous and articulate man." Colonel Wood was president of the Exeter Normandy Veterans' Association and travelled back to the Normandy beaches for remembrance services each year. At 21, he led a platoon of airborne troops to secure two key bridges in Normandy, hours before the Allied beach assault during the Second World War. book printing He was among a group who flew flimsy wooden gliders behind enemy lines and took the bridge in just 10 minutes. So significant was this airborne assault, early on June 6, 1944, that it was described later as the "single most important 10 minutes in the Second World War" and was immortalised in the film, The Longest Day. With the bridges secured, the Germans were unable to send heavy artillery and tanks across the waterways to defend the Normandy coastline, and the D-Day landings were given a greater chance of success. Col Wood was shot in the leg during the assault and evacuated to a divisional aid post in Ranville and eventually back to England. For his heroism, he was awarded the Legion d'honneur, the highest honour bestowed by the French government, and went on to serve 36 years in the Army before retiring in 1978. His service to the military was also rewarded with an MBE and he gained seven campaign medals. Col Woodcock, from Cullompton, said: "I met David when he was a member of staff at staff college and I was a student, but our wives had nursed together before we met. "They were lovely people with a lovely family. David has left a hole that will never be filled." Col Woodcock said Col Wood regularly made pilgrimages to the Normandy beaches to take part in D-Day commemorations. "He missed very few visits," he said. "Provided he was well enough, he always went. cheap coach purses "I first heard the stories of the heroics of June 6 from David on the spot where it happened when he was a guest speaker on a Normandy tour." Ken Buckingham, chairman of the Exeter branch of the Normandy Veterans' Association, helped lead the tributes. "He will be greatly missed and always took an active part in the affairs of our association," he said. "I had visited him in the hospice before his death on March 12 and he celebrated his birthday a few days before." Captain Peter Hodge, honorary secretary of the Normandy Veterans' Association (NVA), also paid tribute to Col Wood. "He was an absolutely remarkable person," he said. "He was a figurehead for the Normandy Veteran's Association and he will be sorely missed. "'He was one of the nicest men anyone was ever likely to meet and, among veterans, he was a household name." makeup brushes Col Wood was also a popular and prominent member of Tiverton Probus. The Kolkata Fashion Week (KFW) began akin to an awards ceremony, with Ritu Kumar facilitated for her work with the crafts of West embroidered patches Bengal. Her collection - featuring dresses, jackets and long tops with tights - had interesting elements of rural motifs on them. It was great to see Ritu innovate what with the Western tinges that she gave to each outfit. The rest of the collection was very Ritu Kumar (i.e. bling, saris, bright colours and bridal wear), some of which we have seen last year at the Couture Week. Giselle Monterio was her showstopper. Designer Leena Taneja mistook the theme of 'earth couture' as lingerie. She did make a sincere attempt to salute Audrey Hepburn, but we are sure Madame Hepburn is twisting in her grave at this book printing moment. Nothing in her collection brought the iconic actor to mind. The dresses were crafted in fabrics that looked like they were straight out of Santacruz market. There were jaded prints and confusion in the length of the maxis. Hallelujah! The Sun came came out with Zubair Kirmani's collection showcasing both mens and womenswear. There were muted colours - plum, peach and beige in straight, tighter and well-fitted silhouettes. Zubair is one of those designers who creates for the understated, yet successful person. He brings out beautiful detailing through his ensembles. This time around, it was his exaggerated shoulders that caught our eye. There was an extra curve at the shoulders and in some ensembles even a cut at the elbow. It was bridal bling for Rocky S. Saris and crush blouses failed to create much magic on the ramps. But something tells us they will fly off the racks. We saved the best for last! Wendell Rodricks struck gold with his 'The Earth Goddess' collection. And yes, this time there were no whites, but colours such as khaki, grey, red-brown and even a hot pink used as a lining. Fabrics like cotton viscose, lyrca, knit and net just about emphasised wholesale sexy lingerie the drapes and structured look of the garments. The viscose knit sari with a built-in choli gets our nod of approval. The paloo split in one section and gathered at the halter neck. The other half looped into a 'kimono sleeve paloo.' We'll say it again, he struck gold! Other articles: http://www.simmentalusa.com/Ians-legacy-is-kept-alive-by.htmlhttp://www.0591r.com/Blog/View/?492
